World Capitals Quiz Guide: 50 Capital Cities Every Quizzer Must Know
World capitals are one of the most reliably tested categories in any geography or general knowledge quiz. They seem like they should be straightforward β but quiz setters are clever. The questions they write are rarely "What is the capital of France?" Instead, they target the gap between the most famous city and the actual capital. Nigeria\'s capital is not Lagos. Brazil\'s is not SΓ£o Paulo. South Africa does not have one capital β it has three.
This guide covers 50 capitals that quiz setters genuinely love, grouped by region, with insider memory tips for each one. Study the ones you do not know yet and you will immediately feel more confident in any geography round.
Africa β The Most Tested Region
African capitals are the single biggest gap in most quizzers' knowledge. Quiz setters know this, which is exactly why they appear so frequently. Below are the ones that come up most often.
π‘ Note: Lagos is bigger but Abuja has been the capital since 1991 β a very common trick question.
π‘ Means "new flower" in Amharic. Home to the African Union headquarters.
π‘ Another trick: Dar es Salaam is the largest city, but Dodoma is the official capital since 1974.
π‘ South Africa has THREE capitals. Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative), Bloemfontein (judicial). Quiz setters love this one.
π‘ Not Casablanca β that is the largest city. Rabat has been the capital since 1912.
π‘ Named after the Akan word for "ants" β a reference to the hardworking spirit of the people.
π‘ Name comes from Maasai phrase meaning "cool waters." At 1,795 metres elevation, it truly is cooler than most African capitals.
π‘ One of the most populous cities in the world and the Arab world's cultural capital. Easy to remember.
Asia β Capitals That Surprise
Asia's capitals are a mix of obvious and genuinely surprising. Many countries have moved their capitals in the past 50 years, creating a goldmine of trick questions.
π‘ Previously called Nur-Sultan (2019β2022) and Astana before that. It was renamed again in 2022. Quiz setters sometimes use the old names β know all three.
π‘ Not Yangon (Rangoon). Myanmar moved its capital to the purpose-built city of Naypyidaw in 2006.
π‘ Not Karachi or Lahore. Islamabad was purpose-built as the capital and inaugurated in 1966.
π‘ Colombo is the commercial capital. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the legislative capital β and one of the longest capital city names in the world.
π‘ Technically Tokyo's official status as capital has never been legally defined, but it functions as and is universally recognised as Japan's capital.
π‘ One of only two world capitals without traffic lights (the other is Ngerulmud, Palau). Worth remembering for a double question.
π‘ One of the world's smallest and most densely populated capital cities, built on a tiny island.
π‘ Means "red hero." The world's coldest national capital, with average temperatures below freezing for most of the year.
Europe β The Ones People Mix Up
European capitals seem straightforward but there are several that regularly catch people out, especially in the Balkans and the Baltic states.
π‘ Often confused with Ljubljana (Slovenia). Slovakia = Bratislava. Slovenia = Ljubljana.
π‘ The L in Ljubljana matches the L in Slovenia. A useful memory hook.
π‘ Often overlooked in European geography. Minsk is one of the largest cities in Eastern Europe.
π‘ Kosovo declared independence in 2008. Not universally recognised, but it has its own capital: Pristina.
π‘ Not to be confused with Chisinau spelled differently in older texts. Moldova is the only European country whose capital is sometimes misspelled in quizzes.
π‘ Formerly just "Macedonia" until 2019. Its capital Skopje sits on the Vardar river.
π‘ Montenegro means "black mountain" in Italian. Podgorica was called Titograd during the Yugoslav era.
The Americas β Hidden Gems
North and South American capitals contain some of the most reliable quiz-setters' favourites β particularly the ones that are NOT the largest city.
π‘ Not Rio de Janeiro, not SΓ£o Paulo. BrasΓlia was purpose-built as the capital and inaugurated on April 21, 1960.
π‘ Bolivia has TWO capitals β Sucre (constitutional) and La Paz (seat of government). Another classic trick question.
π‘ Not Toronto, not Montreal, not Vancouver. Ottawa was chosen as a compromise between French and English Canada.
π‘ Not Sydney, not Melbourne. Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise between the rival cities of Sydney and Melbourne.
π‘ Not Guayaquil (which is larger). Quito sits at 2,850 metres β one of the highest capital cities in the world.
π‘ Belize City is larger and better known, but Belmopan has been the official capital since 1970 after a hurricane destroyed much of Belize City.
3 Smart Ways to Memorise Capital Cities
Link the capital to something you already know. Nairobi sounds like "near Obi-Wan" β bizarre, memorable. Weird associations work better than logical ones.
Trace the country on a blank map and write the capital inside. Spatial memory is powerful β location + shape + name creates three memory hooks at once.
Test yourself immediately after reading. Close this tab and try to recall 10 capitals from this page. Getting it wrong and checking the answer is more effective than reading again.
